Sharesies, the popular investment platform, is set to make waves in the rural sector with its latest move to facilitate online trading of Fonterra co-operative shares among suppliers. Fonterra, known for its ties to milk production, has traditionally conducted share trading through a closed market on the NZX. However, starting in June, co-op members will gain access to trading through the Sharesies mobile app and browser, offering enhanced features such as real-time alerts on price fluctuations.
Leighton Roberts, co-chief executive of Sharesies, sees this agreement as not only a strategic expansion of their business but also a potential boost to liquidity in Fonterra shares. “The ability for people to trade on their mobile devices brings a new level of flexibility and convenience to decision-making in the market,” Roberts commented.
Fonterra’s acting chief financial officer, Simon Till, expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting that a “tailored and exclusive space” on Sharesies’ platform would provide shareholders with a more intuitive and accessible trading experience. “We believe it will offer Fonterra farmers an improved trading experience and new features that will support liquidity under our flexible shareholding capital structure,” Till added.
Sharesies is also introducing additional features aimed at enhancing user experience for farmers. These include the ability to place share orders without having funds readily available in trading accounts and the convenience of managing holdings for multiple farms under a single login.
Looking ahead, Roberts hinted at Sharesies’ potential involvement in running internal exchanges for other co-operatives. The platform has already engaged in discussions with the unofficial Unlisted exchange, which hosts companies like Zespri, Silver Fern Farms, and various other agricultural businesses, as well as investment firm Rangatira. Roberts sees promising opportunities in collaborating with these entities to provide enhanced trading solutions in the future.
In summary, Sharesies’ foray into facilitating Fonterra share trading marks a significant step in bridging the gap between traditional agricultural markets and modern online investment platforms, potentially reshaping the landscape of rural investment and trading.
