What It Measures

Five Pillars of Digital Authority

Authority is why search engines and AI assistants trust one site over another. Your Authority Score (0–100) combines five pillars, every one measured from public data.

Link Authority · 30

How strongly your domain is linked from across the web — measured from the Common Crawl web graph of 135M domains. The closest public equivalent to a Domain Rating.

Popularity & Reach · 20

Your global traffic rank from the Tranco research list, which aggregates several independent popularity sources.

Brand & Entity · 20

News coverage in the last 90 days, a Wikidata entity and Wikipedia article, linked social profiles and Organization schema.

Content Authority · 15

How many indexable pages and articles you publish, and the depth of your homepage content.

Trust & Longevity · 15

Domain age, HTTPS security, reviews and transparent contact details.

FAQ

Common Questions About Digital Authority

What is a Digital Authority Score?

A 0–100 score of how much trust and prominence your website has online compared with competitors. It combines link authority, traffic rank, brand and entity signals, content depth and trust signals. Higher authority makes it easier to rank in Google and be cited by AI assistants.

Is this the same as Ahrefs Domain Rating?

No. Domain Rating is calculated from Ahrefs' private backlink index. Our Link Authority pillar uses the public Common Crawl web graph — a ranking of about 135 million domains by how they are linked from the rest of the web — which measures the same idea from open data. The full Authority Score also adds traffic, brand, content and trust signals.

Where does the data come from?

The Common Crawl web graph (link authority), the Tranco top-sites list (traffic rank), Wikidata and Wikipedia (knowledge graph), Google News (mentions in the last 90 days) and a live crawl of each website (pages, content, schema, social profiles, security). Every number is real, public data — nothing is estimated by AI.

Why do I need to add competitors?

Authority only means something relative to who you compete with. Adding the sites that outrank you — or the businesses you lose deals to — shows the size of the gap and exactly which signals they have that you don't.

How do I close my authority gap?

Your report ranks the actions worth the most points first. The biggest levers are usually earning quality backlinks and press coverage, publishing in-depth content consistently, collecting reviews, and making sure your brand is recognised as an entity (Organization schema, Wikidata, linked social profiles).

Is it free?

Yes. Your scores, pillar comparison, signals table and top actions are free. The full action plan with step-by-step guidance is also free — we just ask where to email it.
