About this tool

What the Design Scope Calculator does

It turns a design wish list — logo, brand guideline, social posts, ads, flyers, banners, brochures, presentations, website screens — into a clear scope: how many design credits it is, what it should cost, how long it takes, and the most cost-effective way to buy it.

What you enter

The kind of project, the deliverables you need (one-off and every month), design complexity, your deadline and what a designer would cost to hire.

What you get

Total design credits, an estimated price and range, a timeline from brief to final files, and the best way to buy: one-off, pay per request or a monthly package.

Best for

Owners and marketing managers planning a brand, campaign, event or website — and budgeting design work before asking for quotes.

How it works

The methodology

  • ›Every deliverable is measured in design credits from our published credit guide — a social graphic is 1 credit, a flyer 2, a brochure 4, a full visual identity 10.
  • ›Credits are priced at A$190, the rate in our 20-credit monthly design package. A one-off request has a A$910 minimum, the price of our smallest single job.
  • ›A one-off project is one brief and one quote. Monthly work is compared two ways — ordered piece by piece, or covered by the monthly package — and the cheaper fit is recommended.
  • ›The 12-month cost of each option is set against hiring your own designer, the same way we compare a build, a retainer and a hire.
The maths

Transparent formulas

Credits per item
= Base credits × complexity (1 / 1.25 / 1.5)
Project fee
= max(one-off credits × A$190, A$910 minimum)
Pay per request / month
= Σ max(item credits × A$190, A$910)
Monthly package
= ceil(monthly credits ÷ 20) × A$3,800
Hiring a designer / year
= Salary × (1 + on-costs)
Timeline (weeks)
= Discovery (1 if brand work) + ceil(credits ÷ 5) + 1 week revisions
Likely range
= Project fee −10% / +20%

FAQ

Common Questions About Design Scope

What does the Design Scope Calculator do?

It turns the design work you need — logo, brand guidelines, social graphics, ads, flyers, banners, brochures, presentations or website screens — into a scope in design credits. It estimates the price and a likely range, the timeline from brief to final files, and whether a one-off project, pay-per-request or a monthly design package is the best fit. It also compares the 12-month cost with hiring your own designer.

What is a design credit?

A simple unit for how much design effort a piece takes. A social media graphic or digital ad is 1 credit, a resize is half a credit, a flyer or pull-up banner is 2, a 4-page brochure is 4, a presentation template or capability statement is 5, and a full logo and visual identity system is 10. Credits make scopes easy to compare and budget.

How is the price worked out?

Credits are priced at A$190, the rate in our monthly design package (A$3,800 for 20 credits). A single one-off request has a A$910 minimum. Detailed or premium work uses more credits per piece. The result is a directional estimate — we confirm a fixed price after reviewing your brief.

When is a monthly design package better than paying per request?

When you need design every month. Ordered one by one, small requests each carry the minimum charge, so a steady flow of social posts, ads and resizes quickly costs more than the package. The calculator compares both and recommends the cheaper one. For a single project, one brief and one quote is usually best.

How long does a design project take?

Smaller pieces like social graphics and banners can be ready in 48 hours. A full project typically takes a week of brief and brand discovery (for brand work), about a week of design for every 5 credits, and a final week for revisions and files. Rush delivery is available on request if your deadline is tighter.

Is it cheaper than hiring an in-house designer?

For most small and mid-sized businesses, yes. A designer on A$75,000 costs around A$93,750 a year once super, leave, software and equipment are added. Unless you need a full-time workload of design every month, a project or monthly package costs far less — and you get a team rather than one person.

What is included with every deliverable?

Custom design (no templates), 2 revision rounds per request, print-ready files at 300 dpi in CMYK plus digital versions, PDF, PNG and JPG files with editable source files where applicable, and commercial use of every final design.
